GRUPO ONDAS Ourstory

Our 30 year journey!!!

1992/1993

Classical Capoeira

RI Capoeira is born at Classical High School under Principal Mezzanotte who reluctantly allowed Tigri (Silas Pinto) to form a semi-supervised group, and use space in the cafeteria and the outdoor cement platform/patio to study, practice, and educate about capoeira.

1996

URI Capoeira Club

The URI Capoeira Club set the tone for the structural and organizational dimensions of Grupo Ondas.  The club centered martial art education and capoeira history - and collaborated with the Cape Verdean Student Association among other student organizations for programming.

1998

Ondas is official

In fall of 1998, Grupo Ondas (AKA BCV Capoeira) was officially established and began attending programming and events outside of the University of Rhode Island (mostly in the New England area and New York - mostly as learning ventures to strengthen the capoeira in Rhode Island.

2000

Ondas finds a Home

In March of 2000, New Wave Self Defense (at the time, solely a Kenpo Karate School) was succeeded by Mestre Tigri, Sifu Fernando Fialho and Sensei Carlos De La Cruz - and New Wave Self Defense became the official home of Grupo Ondas.  That fall, Capoeira officially became a full program at the academy.

2004

First RI Capoeira Encounter

Now established as The Cape Verdean and Brazilian Cultural Center to advance anti-colonization and de-colonization education, Ondas holds its Inaugural Ocean State Encounter hosting international guests and instructors from several states (from Florida to Utah)

2005

Ondas joins MdP Association

Under Mestre Chuvisco's guidance, Mandingueiros dos Palmares became the centralized curriculum for the teaching of capoeira contemporanea.  And in 2007, Mestre João Grande agreed to also serve as a guide (Padrinho) and set the tone for the Capoeira Angola teachings and principles.

2007

Grupo Ondas Viajantes

Grupo Ondas Viajantes embodied synergy, as it combined artists from a range of martial arts and dance backgrounds to complement the teaching of colonization and its lingering legacy - from Capoeira, Kenpo Karate, Mbalax, Hip Hop, Maculele, Acrobatics, Batuku, Pasada, Funaná and Contemporary

2010

Ondas Ranking System

Ondas revisited both its system prior and during its time with Mandingueiros dos Palmares to establish a ranking system consistent with its past, present and future.  The major change involved separating ranking from titles, and paying homage to Mother Africa with the black mestre cord.

2017

Tigri receives Mestre Cord

On December 9th, 2017 hundreds were in attendance to support Mestre Chuvisco's ascension to Grão Mestre - and Tigri becomes the first Mestre of Cape Verdean Descent

2022

Revisited Ranking System

The Ranking system is due for adjustment approximately every decade.  The last adjustment happened in 2010 and due 2020... due to Covid and disruptions, the leaders of the group revisited the system in 2022 to prepare for 2023 major events.

2023

Preparing for Tabareu

Contramestre Tabareu (Lobo-Guará) officially joined Grupo Ondas a decade ago.  He brought experience from previous groups and was Tigri's MdP brother training under mestre Chuvisco for several years prior.  He has helped guide the Ondas work alongside Mestre TIgri - and will be receiving his rank of mestre on October 28th.  This will make him the first mestre of Dominican descent.
